Day 5 Venice Italy 9 day trip 7 Dec-18th Dec)

After breakfast, we went to 'hidden Venice' - the back lanes and ‘campi’, small squares, where tourists often tread.

Upon emerging into Piazza San Marco, admire St. Mark's Basilica and see the lavish pink marbled Doge's Palace, with its Bridge of Sighs. We went for the age-old skill of glassblowing at an arts centre where it concludes with a Venetian glassblowing demonstrated by a Maestro. Later, we strolled past the romantic canals.

Eurydice (from Greek Eurydike) is the name of a nymph in Greek mythology, most famously known as the wife of the musician Orpheus; her story involves her tragic death from a snakebite and Orpheus's failed attempt to rescue her from the Underworld by charming Hades with his music. The name generally means "wide justice," "true judgment," or "she who shows herself amply" and refers to a figure in many famous operas, plays, and artworks.

Daedalus and Icarus
by the renowned Venetian artist Antonio Canova. This is considered one of Canova's early masterpieces, created between 1777 and 1779 when he was just 20 years old.

The work depicts the mythological tale of Daedalus attaching the wings to his son Icarus before their fated flight from the labyrinth of the Minotaur.

The top portion of the panel, called Hunting on the Lagoon is in the Getty Museum, and another matching panel is missing.
